Overview of youth homelessness

Homelessness is an issue that has demanded much attention in recent years. There tends to be a misconception that homelessness is not a problem in York Region, and is, instead, a City of Toronto problem. However, homelessness can be hidden in the sense that those who cannot afford their own accommodations sleep on the couches of friends or family members. Some researchers argue that a person who is not safe in the house, usually due to abuse, is also considered homeless. This has lead the United Nations to develop 2 terms to define homelessness: Absolute homelessness – refers to people who do not have a physical structure to live in Relative homelessness – refers to people who do not have a place to live in that is safe (i.e. free from abuse and unsanitary conditions).
