The Challenge
Yellow Brick House is struggling to meet the needs of abused women and children in our community. We are feeling the pressure of our community’s population explosion: by 2026, 1.5 million people will be living in York region, essentially double the population of 2001.
Although Yellow Brick House provided shelter and support to nearly 4000 women and children last year, it was not enough. Insufficient capacity in our shelter meant we had to turn away 375 children and 172 women, a staggering 547 in total, and the consequences are heartbreaking.
Safe shelter from abuse can be a matter of life or death. Many women ready to make the brave decision to leave an abusive situation are forced to stay in dangerous homes until a shelter bed becomes available. Some seek shelter in other parts of the province, far from family and friends. Others may lose their courage to flee domestic abuse when there is no support available.
Our Plan
We must act now to meet the critical need for additional shelter beds in York region. With no government funding provided for capital projects, we must raise the capital and operating funds to buy land and build the second shelter we so desparately need. The Second Shelter — Second Chances capital campaign has a goal of $4 million by 2011.
Our Capital Campaign team is hard at work, raising awareness and seeking donations. Every contribution makes a difference, whether in financial donations (big or small, one-time/monthly/annually), in-kind gifts, or through fundraising events.
